Vakarchuk urged scientists to work on the Ukrainian "Wikipedia"

Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Ivan Vakarchuk called active participation among scientists in shaping of Ukrainian segment of the international Internet encyclopedia "Wikipedia".

In Minister’s appeal to the academic community is indicated that this is the task of national importance. "Ukrainian Wikipedia may increase even if each of Ukrainian scientists writes in it at least two or three articles on the subject familiar to him," - said I. Vakarchuk. According to him, the Ukrainian version of the encyclopedia contains a lot of unfinished articles, that encourages users to read the foreign versions of the project. In addition, I. Vakarchuk believes that the article in Wikipedia can strengthen the modern Ukrainian scientific terminology.

Director of Public Organization "Wikimedia-Ukraine" (charitable foundation, that raises funds for a national Internet-projects that create free content; it is a regional representative of Wikipedia), Yuri Peroganich, endorsed the minister’s initiative. "Hopefully, after this appeal by Ukrainian Minister of Education, Wikipedia will get more scientific and professional articles," - said Yuri Peroganich. In his opinion, the Ukrainian "Wikipedia" can serve as an educational tool for students and seniors.

Recall that one of the founders of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, also said that Wikipedia "is a typical example when using a non-profit Internet project can be of great assistance in entering the university." He did not mention the case when the two University of Massachusetts entrants failed the entrance exams due to the fact that they used the online encyclopedia only.

Ukrainian experts doubt the educational value of Wikipedia. In particular, the president of Internet Association of Ukraine Tatiana Popova believes, that users should verify the information posted on the Wikipedia, at least against the Great Soviet Encyclopedia.

T. Popova’s view is close to one of Vitaly Shcherbak, Professor of History at National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. "Information from online encyclopedias should be used by teachers and students only after an independent examination. These articles should be filtered out from all elements of the business impact, political and religious lobby" - he said.

Internet encyclopedia “Wikipedia" was created in 2001 by Americans Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger as an expert source of scientific articles and ideas. This is a non-profit project, that is run using charitable contributions. Today "Wikipedia" is represented in 256 languages and is the most visited Internet directory. English version of the encyclopedia includes 3.2 million articles, the Russian-language - 489 thousand. Regional project offices are represented in 24 countries. Creating a Ukrainian version of the encyclopedia began in 2004; it was contributed by 160 thousand people. There are about 200 thousand articles in Ukrainian "Wikipedia" for the moment.
