Morocco - ENP development and neighbourhood security Oct 25 - 30th.

In Rabat, with the Caucasus team.

Looking into the development in women's rights and the expansion of family law and how the EU is assisting in this. Much has improved with progressive legislation emerging through a combination of domestic support from the Moroccan King Mohammed VI and through external support from the likes of the EU. But remains much conservative opposition and a lack of awareness of what rights people actually have under new laws.

Today the team are looking directly at some NGO's who are involved in protecting women and children's rights. Plenty of harrowing tales of abuse, both to women and to children. But the question remains, how wide is popular support for legislative and social change? A common issue with many in the Caucasus too. You can change the law, but implementation is often very hard.

Speaking yesterday with Jerome Cassiers - political advisor to the EU delegation and the Moroccan Minister for Social Development Nouzha Skalli it is clear that there is the will and the financial support there for many developmental projects, securing greater social cohesion in Morocco and, ideally, economic growth.

As we go though the week, we'll be getting more comment and interviews, I'll post as we go along.
