EU: TAJANI IN ALGIERS TO REVIVE SME EUROMED PARTNERSHIP
29 March , 16:33
BRUSSELS, MARCH 29 - Antonio Tajani, the Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Industry, will take part in the Conference of African Industry Ministers in Algiers tomorrow and the following day, in the hope of reviving the partnership between small and medium-sized enterprises in the European Union and those on the southern shores of the Mediterranean.
Tajani will hold a series of talks with African Industry Ministers, in particular those from North African countries, before attending the Conference's plenary session. The EU Commission's Vice-President will use the opportunity to confirm the European Union's support for its neighbours in the southern Mediterranean regarding the launch of "necessary democratic and economic reforms, to answer requests for employment and for new businesses, laying the foundations for lasting stability".
The EU Commissioner will also launch a "new European industrial strategy for Africa", aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two sides of the Mediterranean and helping the African economy to develop its capabilities and enter the international market. The main drivers behind the development, in both the north and the south, are small and medium-sized enterprises, for which Tajani wants to promote a specific "Euro-Mediterranean small business act". In this context, a key date in the diary will be the forthcoming meeting of the Industry Ministers of the 43 member states of the Union for the Mediterranean, which takes place in Malta on May 11 and 12, and which will see guidelines given for work in 2011 and 2012.
