Seeking refuge in a legal freedom of expression in Morocco seems to be a one million miles battle. Criticizing justice, the constitution, the second and even the third men of the country are holly lines that the few journalists who passed them knew a hard fate. In spite of this, facing the red lines of the country is not only a matter of courage. All over the universe, a journalist should express his opinions, including criticism of government, and write about issues of national concern without restriction or hesitation. In Morocco, the arrest of the executive editor of the Al Massae newspaper, Rachid Niny, received a lot of consideration. In fact, the brave man has been a frank critic of many government policies. All that is related to the country’s budget, bribery affairs and social implicit tribulations were spread far and wide on the columns on his private newspaper born to give rise to a populist press. The last summer, Rachid Niny was arrested and is expected to serve up to a year in jail.
After distressing so many activists, international organizations and citizens of Morocco, the election of the Party of Justice and Development offers hope that the journalist will be set free. In a TV interview, the leader of the PJD, Abdelilah Benkirane, stated that Nini’s arrest was unjustifiable and that he should be released so soon. Benkirane also stated he would request amnesty
Definitely, the rebel Rachid Niny is the hero of millions of Moroccans. Through his famous chronicle formerly published on Assabah and later on Almassae (his own newspaper), he won, without a hitch, the confidence and the pride of the medium and the poor classes of the country. Indeed, his frankness and audacity allowed his readers to go beyond several social problems that were tacit in earlier times.
